beGadgets Specials Upgrade - Important Info for Developers

Bookeasy in partnership with Impart Media have some fantastic news! On the evening of Wednesday 27th May 2015, an enhancement and upgrade to the way SPECIALS are showcased on the beGadgets will be launched.

This upgrade will provide website visitors with greater transparency of special deals created by accommodation operators when searching for accommodation and viewing the various product items showcased on operator profile pages.

How Does It Affect Us?

This change will impact the styling of the existing icons displayed on your current beGadget implementation as soon as the enhancement is released. As a result, any current specials icons displayed on your website (whether they're our default icons or custom icons of your own) will be replaced by our new default icons.  If you have customised the styling of the existing last minute and hot deal icons, then you may need to review the changes prior to release in order to prepare new custom icons (in the event you don't wish to use the default beGadget icons).

In addition, new features will allow you to further customise the way specials are promoted to end users, as per the below information.

When Will This Happen?

The upgrade will occur in the evening of Wednesday, May 27th 2015 (approximately 9pm Australian EST).

What Are The Changes?

Prior to this change, the only way that specials and last minute discounts were showcased on the beGadgets were via graphic icons. These icons would flag a product as a "Hot Deal" or "Last Minute", however would only display in the event the end user was searching the exact number of nights applicable to the specials created.

Further limitations included the fact that consumers had no information provided explaining a special's details, as a special's name and description was not displayed via the beGadgets.

But that's all about to change! Once this upgrade is released, the following will occur:

New Icons!

We've updated the default beGadget icons presented to consumers when viewing specials. These icons have been simplified for desktop and mobile devices whilst providing a clear indication to the viewer as to what each icon represents.

There are 9 icons:

Specials Info Now Displays

We've updated the both the region beGadget and operator profile page items beGadget so that the special's name and description is now provided to the end user. This information will be provided to the end user via the following methods:

Region beGadget

  • A generic promotion will display when the end user hovers over the icon for each operator, stating "Specials Available" or "Last Minute Rates Available". This is generic as the region beGadget displays the best available rate (and the operator may have multiple products each with their own unique specials applied).

New Region beGadget Deafult Icons

The default hover text can also be customised by adding the following Javascript code. Please note that this Javascript must be inserted AFTER your beGadget loader script, but BEFOREyour gadget initialisation scripts, which typically start with $w(function() {

<script type="text/javascript">
window.BE.gadget.region.text.specials = {
'active': 'Specials Available',
'LM active': 'Last Minute Rates Available',
'inactive': 'Specials Available for dates near your stay',
'LM inactive': 'Last Minute Rates Available for dates near your stay'

  • The rates displayed in the region gadget's price view are hyperlinked, whereby when the end user hovers over the rate they are provided with the special's name and description. This can be styled when implemented at your discretion.

Region beGadget Price Linking

  • The "details view" tab will display a special and/or last minute icon, with click action to the items beGadget.

  • The "map view" tab will display a special and/or last minute icon on both the list of operators and map icon popups, with click action to the items beGadget.

Items beGadget

    • Specials info will display when the end user hovers over the icon or monetary rate for each product listed. Please note the rate styling can be customised at your discretion, via custom CSS rules in your own template.

    • When the descriptionHover and showHoverInline parameters have been enabled on the items beGadget, the special's name and description will be presented when the end user clicks or presses on the 'more' button. This will expand further information with the special's info at the top.

      The descriptionHover and showHoverInline parameters are a great way to provide this information to users viewing your website on mobile devices (as mouse hovers don't function well on some mobile devices).

  • Text will also be displayed under the icons providing a brief description of the "special type".

     begadget-paystay-icon-text begadget-dollar-discount-icon-text  begadget-percentage-discount-icon-text

    This text is configurable when implementing the beGadgets. If you wish to configure the text, add the following Javascript code. Please note that this Javascript must be inserted AFTER your gadget loader script, but BEFOREyour gadget initialisation scripts, which typically start with $w(function() {

    <script type="text/javascript">
    window.BE.text.upsell = 'Stay longer to get this Special!';
    window.BE.text.specials = {
    '': '{0}% Discount',
    'LM': '{0}% Last Minute Discount',
    'SPY': 'Stay for {0} nights, pay for {1}',
    'DIS': '{0}% Discount',
    'DIV': '${0} Discount'

Upsell Opportunities!

If a consumer is viewing an operator page's items beGadget within a date range whereby a special has been created by the operator, but has not selected the specific number of nights required for that special to become active, the consumer will be provided with a grayscale icon indicating that a special is available.

In this scenario, the end user will still be provided all relevant information regarding the special. The end user will also be able to click on the icon which will automatically adjust the number of nights selected in the gadget to the number of nights required in order for the special to be applicable.

If your website utilises a responsive template or a dedicated "mobile site", please double check all gadgets are displaying correctly on small screen devices when specials are enabled and visible

What Do I Need To Do?

In order to view and prepare for these upcoming changes, Impart Media recommends the following method:

  1. If you have a development / stage / UAT / testing server, update that server to run the beGadgets in development mode, so that you can preview the latest version of the beGadgets as per the following steps. To run the beGadgets in development mode, please adjust the hostname of the URL of the <script>include, from to

    If you do not have any development / stage / UAT / testing server for your website (only a live production website), you will need to wait until after the beGadget upgrade has occurred, then review the changes directly on the live website, (refer to step 3 onwards).

  2. Ensure dollar discount, percentage discount, pay stay deals and last minute discount specials have been created and made available in at least one Bookeasy accommodation operator console, so that you can test effectively.

    If you are running the beGadgets in development mode, then the data/product you see in the beGadgets will also need to be created in the Bookeasy console's development environment. This can be actioned by the Tourism Centre Staff via the following URL:

    Tourism Centre Staff will be able to login using their standard username and password, whereby they can create specials for their accommodation operators (and it won't affect their live data).

    It should also be worth noting that Bookeasy's PVT environment is refreshed on a nightly basis and synced with the data in the live production environment, so if you need to test over the course of a few days then the tourism centre staff will either have to recreate the specials in PVT on a daily basis, or create a test operator in the live production environment for their specials (whereby this data will be synced with PVT overnight and be made available each day).

  3. Check that the Region beGadget is displaying specials icons correctly.

  4. If you wish, customise the styling of specials icons on the Region beGadget, via your own CSS rules.

  5. If you wish, customise the styling of prices on the Region beGadget (which were previously text but are now linked), via your own CSS rules.

  6. Check that the Items beGadget is displaying specials icons correctly.

  7. If you wish, customise the styling of the specials icons on the Items beGadget, via your own CSS rules.

  8. If you wish, customise the styling of the prices listed on the Items beGadget (which were previously text but are now linked), via your own CSS rules.

  9. If your website has a responsive template or a dedicated "mobile site", please double check all gadgets are displaying correctly on small screen devices when specials are enabled and visible.

What our clients think...

  • Natassia Wheeler | Tourism Whitsundays

    Bookeasy's feature rich products and always helpful support team are a must for any destination. Bookeasy's team of experts came onsite and provided both our staff and regional operators with intensive training and insights. In the 9 months since our organisation has seen an 81% increase in bookings revenue providing Tourism Whitsundays a foundation for continued success. Our destination website also benefits from Bookeasy's highly customisable booking engine, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in the years ahead! Natassia Wheeler | Destination Tourism Specialist WMDL | July 2015
  • Vivienne McEvoy | Kununurra Visitor Information Centre

    Kununurra Visitor Centre have had a relationship with Bookeasy for some 5 years and it is over the past 12 months that our relationship has grown stronger with the constant review of processes between both of our businesses. Most recently we have replaced our Point of Sale System (POS) with the ‘Retail’ option available through Bookeasy, which has significantly reduced the costs to the Visitor Centre by way of staff wages and fees associated with the old POS system. Through our relationship with Bookeasy, we were also fortunate enough to work with Impart Media for the update of our website, which was rolled out in November 2015. The assistance provided by the Impart Media team to the Visitor Centre not only provided us with a great new website, but they were also supportive with the ability to work within our extremely tight budget. The result of the new website has seen an increase in online bookings by some 139,000% (One Hundred and Thirty Nine Thousand percent)! We would support anyone using the services of both Bookeasy and Impart media for projects and appreciate the guidance and professionalism in their dealings with Kununurra Visitor Centre.
  • Nadine Heinen | MAPTO

    Our new official tourism website for the Peel Region was launched 02Sep14. The new website excels by offering a very modern design and quality content and ties perfectly in with the 'Anytime Adventures' brand and campaign. This website was created and developed at record speed within less than 2.5 months (!), right on time for the roll out of our fully integrated media campaign commencing at the end of September. The conditions of the project have clearly not been easy considering the tight time schedule, the various stakeholder requirements and the fact that Impartmedia is based at the other end of Australia. But the project ran very smoothly. I would like to thank you and your teams for your excellent work, your creativity, your ongoing support, reliability and professionalism. Please pass my thanks on to your teams. We are very happy with the new website and look forward to an exciting summer.
  • David Mayne | McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitor Centre

    The McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre has used Bookeasy as its online Accommodation and Tour booking system for the past 5 years. The Barossa Valley VIC and ourselves implemented the Bookeasy system at the same time and have seen our accommodation bookings increase significantly – prior to this we used a manual system which was very labour intensive. The Bookeasy staff and help desk are a breeze to work with; always available to answer questions or fix mistakes that have been made. I would have no hesitation in recommending Bookeasy to other VICs as their online booking system. I would be more than happy to field any questions from other prospective users.
  • Lucy Couper | Bass Coast Network

    The Bass Coast Visitor Information Centre Network has worked closely with Bookeasy Tourism Solutions since 2006. Over the years we have seen the Bookeasy product develop into a seamless booking service which is easy to use for our staff and operators. The Bass Coast VICs provide a booking service for approximately 250 accommodation providers and 15 tourist attractions using Bookeasy for online and over-the-counter bookings. The Bookeasy support team are warm, friendly, patient and always professional. We consider Bookeasy as a partner in our business.
  • Andrew Toulalan | WA Holiday Guide

    At WA Holiday Guide, we've been using Bookeasy since 2006. Starting out small and working with only a couple of Visitor Centres in Western Australia we have utilised the Bookeasy platform to expand our partnerships to almost every Visitor Centre in Western Australia which is great seeing that most Visitor Centres in WA also use the Bookeasy platform. This is really convenient as it allows us to co-operate with a large network across the state, all on the same system. We've also been able to utilise the development arm of Bookeasy, Impart Media to constantly upgrade our website and integration with Bookeasy. The result is a state of the art, market leading website that continues to perform. Bookeasy has good flexibility which allows our business to flourish through their innovative affiliate system. We are able to channel all online reservations made on our website through to Visitor Centres instead of processing them in house or on an independent, separate system. This collaboration plugs us into a large support network that allows us to work together on reservations with Visitor Centres and for database support services. Bookeasy is easily one of the largest sources of tourism operator data in Australia and being able to shar ein and contribute to this large database is highly reqarding. We keenly recommend Bookeasy to all Visitor Centres in Australia. We have firsthand experience that Visitor Centres using the Bookeasy system have more members and make more commission compared to those Centres going it alone. Being able to share listings from your local area also saves a lot of staff time in preparing and maintaining operator data. The Bookeasy system allows Visitor Centres to receive online bookings 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with the abolity for a customer to pay themselves online.
  • Andy Glen | DC Mt Barker

    “The Adelaide Hills Visitor Information Centre via the District Council of Mount Barker has been a Bookeasy user for four years. Our purpose built website and our online accommodation booking system have been supplied and supported by Bookeasy during that time. Internal processes and maintenance are easy to understand and apply. We have found Bookeasy to be extremely helpful and professional in all dealings with them and highly recommend them to other Visitor Centres and Councils.”
